About Deborah D Campbell
Scriptural photography to encourage your heart and refresh your soul!
The camera was always there. Growing up around the world, living in three foreign countries before I was 12. My own tour in Africa after I graduated from college. Now two of my four children calling me to Colorado and Washington every summer. Even the florals, woodlands and beaches of what has become my home state of Florida. And now my grandchildren. All these are my reasons to take photos. Every new arena begs for the camera to come to the forefront. Even my latest adventure of teaching high school photography demanded that I improve my skills - one time even from the height of a helicopter!
People. Family. The environment. Nature. Flowers. Landscapes. New places. New sights. All things of beauty catch my eye. They can stop me in my tracks. I must grab my camera to get that shot. I’m always searching for that perfect moment when light hits a flower, or a unique angle or shape that is created by shadows. Vivid colors and contrast or fine details often catch my eye. I can’t help but capture them to share with others. My family, my friends, any who appreciate beauty. Any who are willing to share my perspective.
My formal introduction to photography was in a college class of film photography. Developing black and white film and making prints, adjusting for lighting and shadows, even layering in the enlarger, all contributed to my appreciation of the digital photographic process of today.
My photography took a back stage when I entered the field of graphic design. But that is where my love of letters developed. I learned calligraphy in high school, even lettering the names for all the graduation diplomas in my class. From that skill grew my appreciation for beautiful fonts and how the best arrangement of words and letters could be applied to the graphic project I was working on. These projects most often included photos that needed to be edited in Photoshop, so my photo editing techniques improved throughout this season in my career.
And then my encounter with Jesus gave me a new focus. This new relationship gave me purpose and caused me to fall in love with the scriptures. In my designs, my inspiration might come from a Bible verse that comes alive during my reading. I like to compare Bible translations to discover which wording best complements my design. My next inclination is to search through my hundreds of photos to see which one might visually represent that verse. I want the words to become more alive as they are layered over a beautiful uplifting natural scene. I use Photoshop for my photo editing, to enhance the colors and details, as well as to arrange the words to the scripture I have selected.
I bring together two things I love - the beauty of nature and the truth of our creator. Both captivate me. In my world, both complement each other beautifully. As I continue to create my scriptural photographs, I get excited to see how encouraging they can be for myself. I enjoy the ones I print and frame displayed around my home as visual reminders of our good, good Father. As I share them, I can only hope that they bring life, joy and refreshing to others as well.
You appreciate beautiful photographs of nature. You have your favorite scriptures from the Bible.
So now you have the opportunity to bring them together into one beautiful print that will encourage you daily as you enjoy it in your own home.
